By Collins Baswony: Business Daily Kenya. Looking for a job in Kenya is an uphill task for all. But it is also true that after getting one, reporting to work and the actual assignment may become too routine to the extent of ushering in contempt. By the day, the new cadre of Kenyan employees, who are known as Generation Y, is becoming more restless in search of fun at work. For those who find the eight-to-five five work schedule boring, a new window is opening. It is for the Internet-savvy who have the right education — say who have a degree — and the discipline requiring no supervision. Some of the opportunities are in research, writing, editing, proof-reading, design, web development, and translation. It is called telecommuting; a citizen's form of business process outsourcing (BPO) that requires minimal investment and no business premises. Read More> > >

Kenyan Professors Don’t Delay University Students.

Posted: 11 May 2011 02:20 AM PDT

There has been criticism that Kenyan university professors do not supervise postgraduate students to timely completion. I wish to point out that when students graduate at all levels, it is a win-win situation for the staff, the students, and their families, hence the ululations at graduation squares. It would be suicidal for a professor worth the name to frustrate, inhibit, downplay, or even belittle any of their students. When students fail, it is a sad situation and the professors get concerned. Take the example of the University of Nairobi, which handles the highest number of graduates in Kenya. The sequence of scholarly events from registration to graduation is simple and straightforward. A student registers for a course of his/her choice, completes course work, is assigned two supervisors after careful consultation among faculty members, takes up the project topic, forms a hypothesis, reviews literature, plans the work in several forms, and executes research on the missing gaps of the theses. He or she writes the dissertation according to laid down procedures and makes inferences (conclusions).
