icipe is an intergovernmental organisation funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improved health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

icipe requires the services of a Research Technician to work in the McKnight Foundation-funded Napier
Grass Stunt Disease Project. This position is based at icipe Thomas Odhiambo campus (ITOC) in Mbita, South Nyanza.



Competitive compensation packages will be offered to the right candidates. Based in Nairobi, Kenya the appointments will initially be for two years, renewable.

* Insect mass rearing for the project.

* Setting up, maintenance and monitoring of screen house experiments.

* Provide screen house support for students and visiting scientists.

* Data collection and coding in both electronic and hard copy formats.

* Report writing and updating the supervisor regularly.

* Perform other duties as required.

* Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from a recognised university.

* Minimum 1 years' experience in carrying out screen house procedures particularly insect mass rearing, experimental design and biological data analysis.

* Experience with techniques in insect collection, taxonomy and dissection will be an added advantage.

* Must be computer literate and have good report writing skills.

* Must possess good organisational skills.

* Good communication and interpersonal skills.

* Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.

Project Assistant – Laboratory Technologist

AMREF NGO in Kenya is looking for a highly motivated, organised and results oriented individual to join a dynamic team and help bring better health for Africa.

The position reports to the Laboratory Manager and is based in Nairobi.


To provide technical expertise and support project activities and implementation of the project strategy.

The main role of the position is to support the production of External Quality Assessment (EQA) materials as a major component of the East African Regional External Quality Assessment Scheme (EA-REQAS) project and a requirement to support its scale up.

This will involve training technical and administrative staff at national EQA centres that have been identified to undertake this role by the Ministries of Health in all participating East African countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda.

* Preparing materials for EQA and examining standard materials from regional reference laboratories

* Quality checking of material, preparing and completing documentation for the scheme and maintaining the data base

* Developing appropriate educational programmmes and health learning materials for the EA-REQAS project

* Assist in data entry, analysing results and disseminating reports

* Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly and annual reports relating to the project; assist in preparation of annual proposal and progress reports as per donor requirements

* Provide training in production of EQA materials to staff of the identified EQA centres identified by Ministries of Health in the participating East African countries

* Examine TB and malaria slides from various NGOs sent for EQA rechecking

* Give advice on remedial action to the relevant NGO staff

* Participate in processing EQAS materials e.g. Haematology, Clinical Chemistry and Microbiology sent to AMREF laboratory

* Support in routine laboratory work in AMREF's Central Laboratory and adhere to laid down policies and procedures

* The ideal candidate must have a minimum qualification of Higher National Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science or its equivalent and formal training in proficiency panel sample preparation.

* At least five (5) years of relevant work experience in a busy clinical/laboratory environment;

* training others in proficiency testing material production will be an added advantage;

* experience of working with Ministries of Health and partners;

* excellent interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to prioritise duties and work under minimal supervision.

* Responsible for the management, provision, support and maintenance of IT systems and services at WSTF.

* Preparation of disaster recovery i.e. develops, implement and supervise a functioning backup policy for all WSTF's Workstations and Servers.

* Develop training and orientation programs for staff on ICT initiatives. Train all WSTF staff in the use and application of ICT policies and infrastructure.

* Develop, propose and advise on the adoption of ICT applications, programs and solutions to facilitate the implementation of e-governance within WSTF. Develop strategies to raise awareness within staff on the practical benefits of e-governance.

* Research, review and recommend the purchase of IT equipment, systems, software and accessories.

* Develop, implement and supervise a data management policy in WSTF.

* Sustain and build up the WSTF's ICT infrastructure ensuring that issues are recognized and resolved quickly with minimum disturbance to users.

* Obtain and install the necessary hardware and software upgrades for the ICT network to ensure that the network is capable of meeting the needs of the WSTF.

The Nyanza Reproductive Health Society (NRHS) is a non-profit organization with its headquarters in Kisumu dedicated to improving reproductive health of men and women.

NRHS has several projects researching on HIV prevention; it runs support groups for PLWHA and MARPS, and is working with the Ministry of Health to scale up male circumcision for HIV prevention in various parts of Nairobi, Nyanza, Western and Rift Valley Provinces.

NRHS seeks highly qualified candidates for the position of?Director.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the effective management of the Society’s projects and overseeing the operations of NRHS, including finance, administration, logistics, procurement and human resources.

This senior position will be responsible for overall leadership, management and accountability for the activities and performance in AWF’s conservation program in the Heartland and is open to Tanzania nationals.

The Maasai Steppe Heartland is an important biodiversity area and forms part of the northern tourism circuit of Tanzania with parks such as Tarangire and Lake Manyara. It predominately occupied by Maasai pastoralists.

The successful candidate will be a highly effective leader in the conservation sector able to manage large programs with ecological, social, political, cultural and economic complexities.

He/she will also be principally responsible for managing the Scaling up Conservation and Livelihood Efforts in northern Tanzania (SCALE) program funded by USAID Tanzania that seeks to deliver transformational conservation and economic impacts in the wider Tarangire-Manyara-Kilimanjaro-Natron ecosystem (TMKNE) through innovation, the replication of lessons learned, and building the capacity of local actors.

He/she should have demonstrated experience in the establishment of wildlife management areas, the national policy for managing wildlife outside protected areas for community benefit. He/she is expected to be results oriented and able to lead a team of highly qualified professionals to meet program targets and goals and achieve results.

The successful candidate will also work with the Regional Director and other senior staff to design heartland strategies and provide leadership to implement field-based conservation actions.

Required qualifications:

  • Post graduate qualification (PhD or MSc) in natural sciences, social science, project management, economics or another field related to conservation;
  • Minimum 10+ years of proven senior leadership, project management, administrative and field experience in conservation;
  • Experience and a proven success record in working and implementing projects in Tanzania or the wider East Africa; proficiency in both English and Kiswahili (spoken and written) is required;
  • Proven experience leading and managing large complex projects budgets;
  • Results focused orientation with proven track record of delivering and reporting results, and ensuring compliance with USAID and other donors requirements, and possesses sound judgment and strong decision making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build capacity of multiple stakeholders to engage in landscape planning and management;
  • outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to build coalitions, negotiate, and manage conflict situations; and work with different cultures found in northern Tanzania
  • Sound understanding of and experience implementing landscape-level conservation approaches;
  • familiarity with innovative methods, including community conservation and conservation enterprises; and integration of conservation with health, population, agriculture and gender dimensions.
  • Outstanding communication skills with ability to clarify vision and strategy; good report writing skills and working knowledge of computers and MS Office software package;
