| Reasons Why Your MBA Degree Is Worthless. Posted: 10 Aug 2011 10:33 AM PDT
This is a followup on Tuesdays article where we discussed on whether an MBA is necessary. You can get the article by clicking here. The article elicited some comments and below i have published two. Comments unedited. MBA ni kama kujezea mbuzi gitaaa.the real problem with our country Kenya is lack of enough jobs and many people have been blinded to think that the only way to success is through piling up Kenya is getting over saturated with many MBA holders and especially people who are very young. I believe MBA goes with experience and how one sees themselves in a particular career. Honestly I think people need to consider the expectations when deciding whether to do an MBA. Will the employers afford to pay you after the MBA? especially with these current economic times? Today’s article is based on these comments. Reasons why you should not get an MBA. This article is targeted more so to the young. Those under 30 yrs old. Though one is free to do MBA with multiple reasons it makes more sense to stop thinking about the MBA alternative if the reason for your MBA is only one of the below. As usual applying common sense in career decisions is highly recommended!
When you want to earn more – Young kenyans try to do an MBA to earn more. Earn more money, reputation etc. They believe slogging 2 years of their life studying an MBA will result in decades of happiness and fat pay cheques. That's a dream which will never come true. The jobs that you are targeting want the maximum out of you. They are not to suck every hour from you but they are there to challenge you to take up every responsibility and deliver. Earning good money and repute is just a by product. After you get an MBA, it's harder to take an entry-level or low position; thus, you better be certain about what you want to do for the rest of your life. Well, OK, that doesn't sound completely off-the-wall. You don't have a job and instead of sitting around moping or whiling your time away, you've decided to get a post-graduate qualification that'll do you good in the future. It will even sound commendable in your CV when you explain that gap in service. Don't think I'm a hater here, but I really don't think not having a job at the moment is a convincing reason to commit to a rigorous, full-time, 2-year course that will take all your time and energy. If a job is what you really want right now, shouldn't you be putting that time and energy into getting employed instead of getting more employable in the future? An MBA makes much more sense after you've got a few years of experience under your skin, anyway. I've never known an MBA to look bad on anybody's CV as long as it comes from a good, accredited, respectable university. Get an MBA if you're sure it is the course to take. Live your own life. It happens too often for me to be amused at this. Many young Kenyans make major decisions based on their current love-interests. I hope it doesn't happen, but your relationship with your girlfriend or your boyfriend is not likely to last as long as the MBA program! This article isn't about slamming MBA's or the notion of getting an MBA. We know people get MBA's for numerous reasons; some may be valid and some not so much. The important thing to understand is that such a degree won't get you to be a better person and professional if you don't understand first what it is you are meant to be doing in life, what your passion is, and if you approach your life and future from a place of fear instead of a place of confidence in your capacity and worth. |

Website: www.oneacrefund.org Job Description Rapid organization growth translates into great career opportunities for our staff. We invest heavily in careers – we want to develop our next group of country directors, R&D directors, and partnership leaders. In their first year, our program associates lead 3-5 internal consulting projects, such as: - Impact innovation: A program associate recently designed a new harvest storage product and farmer training, and tried it with a few hundred farmers. The trial demonstrated an increase in harvest profits by more than 10%. Next year, we expect to sell this product to over 40,000 farmers. - Growth innovation: A staffer recently designed a new viral marketing initiative. She identified our best and most enthusiastic farmers, and turned them into volunteer "replication agents" who are empowered to recruit new groups of farmers. Our staff person designed the trial protocols, trained 10 field staff to test the idea, and observed the trial in-field, resulting in 25% higher client enrollment. We are now rolling this out across more than 200 field sites. - Operations rotation: In addition to internal consulting projects, program associates also spend time paired with a regular "operating unit," which has 50+ staff. This is an opportunity to observe how regular operations work, while also building leadership skills by mentoring a larger number of staff. In their second year, our strongest performers take leadership over a relatively independent pilot within the One Acre Fund network, while earning a significant and sustainable salary increase. Examples include: - Burundi: One Acre Fund plans to launch one new country per year, for the next five years. A program manager moved to Burundi early in 2011 to direct field operations for an initial 400-farmer pilot. Six months later, that pilot is now being quadrupled in size and is our newest country launch. - Farmers United: One of our program managers piloted an innovative trial in a new area of Kenya. This trial helps farmers to save up for farm inputs over time, in addition to taking loans, and has high potential to scale rapidly. Over two years, he has created a field organization of 80 staff from scratch. His organization, called "Farmers United," cooperates closely with our existing field units, but also operates with a high degree of independence within the One Acre Fund umbrella. Career Growth and Development: One Acre Fund invests in building management and leadership skills. We provide constant, actionable feedback delivered through weekly mentorship and through regular career reviews. We also have regular one-on-one meetings, where we listen to and discuss career goals, and work collaboratively to craft roles that each person can be passionate about. Because of our rapid growth, we constantly have new high-level roles opening up and opportunities in many functions and countries. This results in fast career growth for our staff. Qualifications We are seeking exceptional professionals with 2 to 5+ years of work experience, and a demonstrated long-term passion for international development. They will serve in a career-track position that combines both field and management experience. We are looking for truly extraordinary candidates that will help take our organization to the next levels of impact and scale. This is not a short stint in Africa – this is a competitive posting for a career-track role. Only 3% of applicants make it to a phone screen. Therefore, please only apply if you fit these criteria:
Preferred Start Date: Flexible Compensation: Starts very modest. However, this is a career-track role with fast raises for performance, paying a meaningful salary for long-term placement in developing nations. Benefits: Health cover, immunizations, flight, room and board. Two annual home flights provided. Career development: Quarterly management consulting-style career reviews and constant feedback. Your manager will invest significant time in your career development. Sponsor International Candidates: Yes The rest is here: |
