| Cv Writing. Tips To Make Your CV Stand Out. Posted: 13 Sep 2011 11:07 AM PDT
With thousands of new graduates and professionals joining the unemployed in today’s labor market, it’s apparent that now, more than ever before, the people looking for employment must work even harder to ensure that they stand out to employers through their applications. If my emails on a daily basis are anything to go by then I would average over 1000 new people are looking for jobs and with each new position the applications are numerous. A further look at the application and you With that type of pressure and competition, the question becomes, how will you stand out among the masses? The answer is simple: through your CV. You may say this is over done already and quickly dismiss this as another article that's blowing the CV trumpet way too long. But going from the applications , I receive it is important that you critically look at your CV. If crafted effectively, your CV is perhaps the most valuable marketing tool you’ve got. After all, in a matter of seconds, its contents can make or break your chances of landing an interview. I normally spend just a few seconds to minutes reviewing a CV and unfortunately you may find someone with excellent qualifications but a poorly written CV with non essential information. Now that you know you have approximately 60 seconds to impress an employer, you had better make sure that your CV is the best possible representation of you and your achievements. Here are five tips to help you produce an effective CV: You only have a matter of seconds — a minute if you’re lucky — to impress a human resource or hiring manager with your CV. Don’t make him search for the important material. Including a career summary at the top will give managers an immediate snapshot of your skills and accomplishments. Keep it up-to-date No matter the state of the economy and I know many of you will be nodding your head at this; you should always have a recent CV and portfolio (for the creative) on hand. I always conduct my own surveys and sometimes I may ask the day someone recently updated their CVs. The answers I get are outstanding to say the list. Any time your responsibilities increase or you accomplish something significant, update your CV with that information. You never know when you’ll need to produce a current CV. Incorporate keywords. Tracking systems are becoming increasingly popular to screen and weed out unqualified candidates. In fact, Human Resource Managers look for these key words. Leadership, Communication skills among other key words are the most sought after. To avoid the discard pile, integrate keywords from the job posting into your CV. Doing so will heighten your chances of showing up near the top of the employer’s ranking of the most relevant candidates. CV Type. Almost every major industry is experiencing mass layoffs. That being said, many job seekers are looking for work in new industries and professions where they might not have much experience. Listing your experience by skill categories rather than chronologically shows employers the proficiencies you possess rather than those you lack. Include all relevant experience. Whether you’re expanding your job search to a new industry or you’re a new college graduate, you might not have the necessary experience to land that job you want. Make sure you’re including all pertinent experience on your CV. Volunteer work (yes I did say volunteer), leadership roles or community involvement are all areas most employers consider to be relevant experience. Now what? Now that you’ve incorporated these five tips into your CV worst thing you can do is send a generic copy out to the masses while you sit on your couch and pray for a response. Be proactive with your CV and take advantage of the tools available to you. On job sites like www.careerpointkenyajobs.co.ke, for example, you can subscribe for alerts all of which can increase your visibility to new openings. Additionally, you should utilize social networking sites to host your application materials, as well as target your CV to the company where you’re applying. Taking advantage of all the resources at your disposal will help ensure that your CV stands out among the masses. |

| Caroline Mutoko: Of Teachers, Salaries and Other ‘Misclennous’ Items Posted: 13 Sep 2011 10:51 AM PDT
Yes, you read that word right – Misclennous. The first time I saw that nasty word was on Bull’s Eye on Friday night and it broke my heart. Some may have laughed, but I was beside myself with pity and misery. If you know and understand how I feel about my teachers, you know I am totally for teachers getting better pay, Our public education system is broken, it doesn’t matter how much we yell and scream to the contrary. We need to upgrade our schools and the facilities therein. It also goes without saying that we need a body similar to the one that gave us our new constitution to come up with a new syllabus and curriculum. Yes we need a Committee of Experts on our education system sooner rather than later. We need a team to sit down with definite deadlines and timelines to overhaul the whole darn thing. It’s a freaking mess. Forget the nutcase with the horn who was rolling on the road – the whole public education system needs looking at and that guy with the horn needs to be fired. No one will miss him. However, as we wait and hope for someone who’s paid by our taxes to take up the task, I would like to ask public school teachers to look at themselves. It’s no secret that very few youngsters in this nation aspire to become public school teachers. It’s not an aspirational career choice. It’s the graveyard shift of careers and before the members of Kuppet and KNUT start yelling about how it would be better if they were paid more, allow me to put you squarely in your place. Class is in session – pay attention. A few years ago when I joined radio, no one considered it a worthy profession. In fact, let’s be very honest, a lot of people (including some family members and even friends) thought I had thrown away a great education and a degree to do a job reserved for non-achievers. For heaven’s sake, in my time, no one filled out a career application form and said “I want to be a radio presenter”. My first few years at Capital were tough going. But we who first worked in privately owned media had to do the work and do the time to show that this was indeed a great career and a great job. We could tell you a thing or two about just being able to get a credit card or bank loan back in the day. The number of people who stop me on the street today to tell me how wonderful a job I’m doing are also the same people who barely seven years ago wondered when I was going to “get a serious job”. My generation of broadcasters whether in TV, radio or print have had to cut a niche for themselves and re-define themselves from the “old school” folk who went before us. We modelled ourselves around international greats even as “old school” said we’d never make it with accents like mine and views like those of Zain Verjee, Julie Gichuru and may I add with great zeal – Maina Kageni. We simply soldiered on and sort to raise the bar, and redefine this job for ourselves and our trade. Then and only then were we allowed to sit in the same room as other “professionals”. Only then could we meet with Presidents, Kings and Queens. Until we redefined how we saw ourselves and this job, we could yell all we wanted – like everything else in life, we had to earn our place in the sun, down to the salutes from cops and watchmen alike. To the public school teachers, you need to go back to school as it were and begin to redefine yourselves and your profession. If you are looking to be taken seriously, you need to take yourselves seriously. I also want to add that if you’re still “old school” in your outlook towards this profession, you will find yourself slowly phased out and forgotten. Enough of the blame game and the nonsense. Here’s the cold hard truth: If what we saw on Bull’s Eye defines you, then you are paid exactly what you’re worth. Caroline Mutoko is a radio presenter among other duties at Kiss FM (Radio Africa) |
