| Should You Include Part Time Work & Biashara’s In Your CV? Posted: 26 Sep 2011 10:38 AM PDT
Many experienced but jobless Kenyans opt to start a business when the going gets tough. And in order to make ends meet in this tough economic environment some of us have taken part time jobs. The big question is, should you list those part time jobs or disclose in your CV that you once owned a biashara? My answer is its depends but i strongly urge you not to include this in your CV. It's not a rare occasion for me to talk to someone that is surprised that they are struggling in their job search It's a tough predicament. Indeed, they often have gained tremendous experience and have a lot to offer a company. However, there is a lot of perceived additional baggage that goes with hiring a former business owner as well. What are the issues, and what can be done about it? Whether they are true for any one individual or not, some negative preconceived notions of former business owners or those running part time business are: They're used to having complete control, and so can't work well on a team.
So, does that mean they are doomed? Not at all. However, some self-evaluation, and a different approach is definitely called for. Be honest with yourself! Take a look at those objections. If you're honest with yourself, are any of them true for you? If so, you first need to deal with them. If they're not true for you, or once you've dealt with them, you need to be able to articulate how and why those notions don't apply to you. Many of those questions won't get asked in your networking or interviews, however, they are often thought. So you need to address them proactively. |
| How To Last Long In A Job. Ways To Survive Posted: 26 Sep 2011 10:30 AM PDT
This article was first published by the Business Daily. Most people always receive new employment with exhilaration. Not only is it a guarantee of some income, it is also the chance to meet new people and to show what you can do. In time, an employment provides the profile required to access capital from financial institutions that could be But while getting hired was the only challenge of the bygone era where only death or retirement could end a tour of duty, the modern workplace is becoming notorious for its turnover of personnel. When Janess Koskei returned to Kenya after completing her studies at Harvard University, everybody could have bet that local corporates would be falling over themselves not just to have her on their roster, but to keep her happy. At 27, Koskei had a PhD in Management Psychology and an incredibly brilliant mind for her age. She had also adopted that American deep throated twang that turns ordinary sentences into entertainment.
However, Koskei resigned after four months. Right now, two years since she returned home from the US, she is on her third job having learnt big lessons on surviving the Kenyan workplace. "There are a lot of big egos, sensitive fingers and redundant mentalities one has to deal with," she tells the Business Daily. "I learnt that no matter how good you are, there are some people who will never listen to your opinion. It is most frustrating but offers some lessons if you really want to survive in your job." Koskei felt misused and curtailed to the point that she once considered returning to the US where the giant carmaker Ford Motor Company had offered her a graduate programme opportunity. She fears that the Kenyan office has too much emotional and personal shenanigans that leaves little window for ideas to thrive. "At my first company straight out of America, there was conflict about who among two top managers I should report to," says Koskei. "A while later, the managing director started detailing me duties that in effect reduced me to his personal assistant and denied me the space I needed to execute the ideas I had for the growth of the company." She adds: "In the end, I had to run away from the comedy and find something different to do with myself." Koskei says that her second employer was much better but still complicated, especially in executing new ideas. The Business Daily conducted a survey on how to last in employment and identified the following as some of the important tips Every manager would welcome new ideas. But every leader likes to have their own input reflected in your idea as well. To excel in the business world, you should let your bosses take the credit for your ideas as the overall leader. If you push too much to be recognised for your efforts, the boss would feel upstaged and the ensuing clash of egos would result in only one casualty — you. The other unfortunate trait that has put many an employee to the sword is proprietary arrogance. By believing that you possess some ideas that the business cannot run without could lead you to a feeling of indispensability. The reality may not be so flattering. People like the person with the interesting stories, don't they? Not when you cannot stop it. While oral communication enables friendship and trust, it could undo all that and even get somebody in trouble if not well checked. According to Wilfred Kamami of horticultural company Wilmar, too much talk shows a lack of class and respect. "Guys who talk too much always lend themselves prone to pointless babble," he says. "And because talking too much is a disease, people who suffer from it would do anything to sustain a tale including blending facts with absolute lies and contradictions," adds Kamami. "They would talk about themselves, about others and about the employer, which most of the times is hard to tolerate." He says he would be wary of employing somebody who just can't stop talking because such people are mostly unable to match that with deeds and are a brand risk. While the folly of reading too much into appearances have been widely cautioned, modern business tends to lean heavily on image to enable judgment. You will need to have an impeccable grooming sense to capture the imagination of your potential employers. But to shift that into professional respect, that has to be maintained and further blended with a tidy operational ethic. University of California, UCLA, has identified the critical importance of neatness in business excellence. In their survey, 'The Role of Appearances in Business Excellence' report published in July 2010, they say a neat and organised personality attracts respect and trust while dishevelled characters tend to repel other people. Subconsciously, according to the report, people tend to want to be associated with those whose appearances and gentleness of manner has a sleek quality. It is amazing how much society still attaches to physical robustness. It is no measure of ability but it is always a good sign. |
