Solidarites International has 2 areas of intervention in Kenya (Northern Marsabit and Nairobi informal settlements) and 3 areas of intervention in Somalia (Gedo, Lover Juba and Adaado). This consultancy focuses exclusively on North Horr program. Purposes of the evaluation SI has implemented DFID funded emergency and drought recovery project in North Horr District in 2008 and has a current project ending in October 2011. The focus has been to improve access to quantity and quality of water, sanitation/hygiene practices and food security for the target beneficiaries. Under European Commission funding Solidarites is implementing a WASH project in North Horr and Chalbi Districts in Northern Marsabit Region. | Why Small And Medium Sized Kenyan Employers Reject People With Degrees. Posted: 16 Sep 2011 10:09 AM PDT
The Kenyan job market has undergone many changes in the last decade. University education is now open to many thanks to registration of new local based and international universities. And with the emergence of many universities, many more " less educated" Kenyans have 'seen' the advantages of having 'papers' and are trooping back to colleges and universities in droves thanks to H.E.L.B and the easily accessible personal/educational loans. Unlike a decade ago, you now stand a better chance of being admitted to your desired course regardless of We have also experienced new industries emerge and old ones being re-organised. A good example would be the telecommunication sector. With the introduction of mobile phone companies in the Kenyan market, we have companies like Safaricom and Airtel where fresh graduates have found a place to begin their careers. And with stiff competition, banks have had to change their business model. Our banks now prefer younger and technologically savvy employees and recent graduates are the first to benefit. The economy has also improved considerably since baba Jimmy took over. It's now easier to run a business with minimal government interference. So, now we have many graduates being churned on a yearly basis thanks to the many universities and small businesses coming up. You'd think this would be a perfect scenario. Young graduates need jobs and small firms need fresh minds. However, this is not the case. Increasingly, small and medium sized firms are rejecting our graduates. I did my research on why small and medium sized firms are rejecting fresh graduates and here is my finding. I hope that if you are fresh from school you will learn a point or two. 1. Unrealistic Expectation. According to business owners, graduates want everything at once. They don't have the patience. They want to graduate and join the firm at managerial level simple because they have the 'papers'. To them, the theory is more important than experience. 2. Unrealistic Salary. This one is related to the first point. Not only do graduates want better titles, they want to earn six figure digits without putting in the effort. They want to live in Runda, drive six months after college, and live in well-furnished house. And if they can't get 'that' job, many will resort to bank loans to bankroll their expensive lifestyle. 3. Easily bored. Maybe many medium sized firms have roles not challenging enough or how else can you describe the tendency for graduates to change jobs now and then? To avoid this pain, many firms have this unwritten rule to avoid graduate job applicants at all cost and consider diploma holders only. Diploma holders are likely to stay with such firms much longer. 4. The issue of training. Some companies reject graduates on the basis of inadequate training. From the mouth of a business owner, 'Kenyan graduates are useless!' 5. Prestige. Young graduates stand accused of looking down upon the small firms. They all want to work for Barclays, UN, PwC and Safaricom of these worlds. The reality is that these firms only need a certain number of graduates each year. They all cant fit there even if the management was to fire everyone and then hire graduates In conclusion, many small and medium sized employers in Kenya believe that graduates lack work ethic, have unrealistic salary expectations, and become rapidly dissatisfied with their jobs. On the other hand, employers said that while graduates and non-graduates require the same degree of on-the-job training, non-graduates are cheaper, have lower expectations, have more work experience, and are likely to remain with the company longer. I wrote this article to advice that young graduate now tired of looking for a job with the big firms and wants to consider the small and medium sized employers. You should be aware of the many prejudices that exist against you as a fresh graduate and how to counter them. After all, jobs are with the small and medium sized firms. The bigger the firm, the harder it is to penetrate. You will encounter open corruption, nepotism, sexual harassment all in the name of getting a place in these so-called bigger and better firms. N.B. For those small and medium sized firms willing to hire degree holders, majority were VERY uncomfortable with a Masters. |
